On Jan 29, 2023, at approximately 4:06 a.m., officers responded to the area of Magnolia Avenue and Hill Street regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles that had been involved in a collision. The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene and transported one of the drivers to a local hospital. The other driver was determined to be deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1996 Toyota Camry, driven by an adult male, was traveling southbound on Magnolia Avenue south of Hill Street. A 2021 Hyundai Sonata, driven by a male adult resident of the City of Downey, was traveling at a high rate of speed heading northbound on Magnolia Avenue in the southbound lanes when he struck the Toyota, ultimately resulting in the Toyota driver’s death. The impact also caused the Toyota to collide with several parked vehicles. The Hyundai driver was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

At this time, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will work to determine the decedent’s identity and notify the next of kin.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact L.B.P.D. Collision Investigation Detective Kelsey Myers at (562)570-7355.
