On March 23, 2023 at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Gaviota Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male pedestrian.
Upon their arrival, officers located an adult male pedestrian in the roadway and immediately began life-saving measures. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed an adult male pedestrian ran southbound across Pacific Coast Highway, east of Gaviota Avenue, outside of a crosswalk and was struck by a 2007 Toyota Camry that was traveling eastbound. The driver of the Toyota, a 19-year-old resident of Signal Hill, remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.
Speed, impaired driving, and distracted driving do not appear to be a factor in this case.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner.
