It’s an opportunity to own a piece of Hollywood history. The longtime Sherman Oaks estate of late actor and comedian John Witherspoon – known to millions as “Pops” from the “Friday” franchise – is for sale.
His wife, Angela Robinson Witherspoon, is selling the family’s picturesque two-property compound on Valley Vista Boulevard for a combined $4.625 million.
“We’ve made so many memories here over the years,” said Angela. “We raised our two sons in this home… We’ve held countless gatherings, from Christmas parties to my husband John’s celebration of life, which was attended by friends like David Letterman, Chris Tucker, and DJ’d by Shawn Wayans.”
The guest list wasn’t just Hollywood royalty.
“We hosted Kamala Harris here in 2020 for her first presidential run—a ‘Cookout for Kamala,’ and even a wedding for our friends’ daughter,” Angela shared. “After so many special years, I’m ready to downsize… and spend more time traveling the world.”

Angela now runs the Witherspoon Family Foundation, which provides emergency financial help to actors, comics, and writers in need.
Witherspoon passed away in 2019 at age 77, acting in films and television to the very end. He gave us quotable and GIF-worthy lines as Willie “Pops” Jones in the “Friday” series. He was also the hilarious “Pops” Williams on “The Wayans Bros.” and the voice of “Granddad” on The Boondocks.
His credits also included Eddie Murphy’s “Vampire in Brooklyn,” “Black Jesus,” and “The Richard Pryor Show.”
His lush, tree-lined estate south of Ventura Boulevard and east of the 405 Freeway recently served as a filming location for the independent movie “Villa Hollywood.”
The main home (3-bed, 4-bath) is listed for $2.975 million, and the adjacent home (2-bed, 3-bath) is $1.65 million. Both encompass 25,000 square feet of land. The real estate agents, Lucas and Isaiah Arias at Compass, call it a “true hidden gem.”
“This is a true secret hideaway in Sherman Oaks,” says Lucas Arias. He notes the home’s design was “influenced by the family’s travels through Tuscany and Provence,” giving it a warm, artistic vibe. “It’s been a beloved home for the Witherspoon family, and now it’s ready for someone new to make it their own.”
