On Nov. 22, 2022, Homicide detectives were provided with preliminary information by the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner-Coroner that the stab wounds sustained by the victim do not appear to be the cause of death. The Coroner’s Office will continue to conduct their own investigation, including a review of a pending toxicology report.
Due to this update, this incident has been reclassified as an “Undetermined Death Investigation.” Charges and filing considerations with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will be reconsidered pending the conclusion of the Coroner’s Office investigation. The suspect was released, and the investigation is ongoing.
This reclassification changes the year-to-date total of murders in Long Beach from 35 to 34, as of Nov. 28, 2022.
Original News Release 11/20/22:
On Nov. 19, 2022 at approximately 4:47 p.m., officers responded to the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue to assist the Long Beach Fire Department regarding a battery, which was later determined to be a murder of a male adult victim.
Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult suspect, being treated by Long Beach Fire for a non-life-threatening laceration to the upper body. The suspect told officers he had stabbed another man in the area.
Additional officers located the male adult victim with multiple stab wounds to the upper body in the 2100 block of Williams Street. Officers immediately began life-saving measures until they were relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. Fire personnel determined the victim to be deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives responded to investigate the incident. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives determined that the victim and suspect, who are known to one another, got into an argument. The victim began to physically assault the suspect. The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.
The suspect was arrested and was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking. Detectives arrested Ronald Wandersee, a 64-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked for murder. His bail is set at $2,000,000. Detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office later this week for filing consideration.
The victim has been identified as Michael Marker, a 58-year-old resident of Long Beach.
