At the March 31,2022 General Meeting of the La Palma-Cerritos American Association of University Women (AAUW) at the Cerritos Library, Program Co-Chair Karen Cox announced the names of officers for the 2022-2023 year who were submitted by Nomination Committee Chair Dorothy Edwards. Nominees included the following members: President, Celia Spitzer; President-Elect, Open; Program Co-VP’s, Faith Herschler and Cathleen Niederman; Membership Co-VP’s, Jacqueline Shahzadi and Saurabh Deedwaniai; AAUW Fund Co-VP’s, Sue Solomon and Tobi Balma; Secretary: Christine Taxier, and Treasurer, Marilyn Forsstrom. Since the office of President-Elect has not been filled, nominations can still be made by members by contacting Nomination Committee Chair Dorothy Edwards at her e-mail [email protected] Election of Officers for 2022-2023 will take place at the April 21, 2022, meeting of the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW at Cerritos Library.
As part of the business meeting, Committee Chairs gave their reports for the following committees:
- STEM (Tech Trek): Celia Spitzer reported that interviews to select for the Tech Trek Camp in June were completed and two students and alternates were selected and would be informed on April 4.
- Academic Achievement Awards: Joan Pylman reported that the Awards Selection Committee were reviewing 12 applications. Two scholarships of $1,250 each will be awarded, one to a re-entry woman student who waited a few years before completing two years of college, and one to a woman student completing two years of college. Both students plan to go to a four-year college or university in the Fall.
- College/University Liaison: Diane Merrick requested donations of clothing and canned food items for students at Cerritos College through Falcons’ Nest.
- Su Casa: Joan Pylman reported that our branch has been shopping for groceries on the first and third week of the month for Su Casa for over 32 years. She asked for more volunteers.
Program Co-VP Karen Cox announced that Norma Williamson and Gail Ross would be receiving a “Standing Ovation Award” from ABC Unified School District (ABCUSD) on April 5, 2022, at the main office of ABCUSD, for their volunteer work with the Legacy Project for high school students in ABCUSD. Members were invited to attend the event.
The public is invited to the next General Meeting the La Palma-Cerritos AAUW which will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the Cerritos Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guest speaker for the evening will be author Francine Rodriguez, who will discuss her award-winning anthology, A Woman’s Story. The book is about the lives of nine Latinas of varying ages and lifestyles living in Los Angeles who experienced different problems in their lives. The book won a Silver Medal at the 2022 International Book Awards.
