Corona del Mar High School’s baseball team defeated San Clemente 2-1 in eight innings at Angel Stadium Thursday afternoon as part of the Halo Classic.
CdM got on the board first in the third inning when Dillon Lane doubled to left center that one hopped the fence driving in Chris Wheat who singled earlier in the inning.

Stevie Jones started for CdM and was in a pitcher’s duel with San Clemente’s starter Pearce Brown. San Clemente tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a catcher’s interference call on a play at the plate.
Isaiah Vasquez (1-1) entered in the seventh inning for CdM (8-6) and threw two scoreless innings to record the win.
San Clemente (7-8) looked like it had won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Mike Erspamer crushed a ball to deep right field.
“Carter Danz made an amazing diving catch running towards the fence,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “Danz was able to get up and double up the runner at first to extend the game.”
CdM’s Vince Menard was hit by a pitch to open up the eighth inning. Danz then singled and Jones had a bunt single. Menard scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch that proved to be the winning run.
“That was a fun game to be apart of. Both starting pitchers were really good,” McCaffrey said. “Dillon Lane’s double was the spark we needed. The ball he hit was hit really hard.
“I have been coaching a long time now, and the play Carter Danz made was one of the best catches I have seen in high school baseball. He was running towards the warning track and caught the ball while diving towards the fence. He was then able to get up and throw the ball to first to get us out of the inning and extend the game. If that ball lands, the game is over, and they win.
“It was a great experience for our boys to play in the big stadium and I’m really happy they were able to walk away with a hard-fought win.”
