Irvine, Uni, Northwood and Tesoro baseball teams capture Thursday victories

IRVINE 6, PORTOLA 1: The Vaqueros remained in the hunt for the CIF playoffs with a Pacific Coast League victory Thursday at Irvine. “It was another great outing for Joon Lee,” said Coach Gabriel Cota.

Lee pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing two hits and no earned runs.

“He struck out seven batters and was in command all game,” Cota said. “We did enough offensively to get the win.”

Irvine was led by Nate Valencia (1 for 2, two walks, one RBI and two runs scored), Adam Valencia (1 for 2, one walk, two RBI and a run scored), Evan Tamayo (1 for 2, one RBI), and Owen Featherston (two RBI, one walk).

Irvine (11-14-1, 9-9-1) is in fourth place entering a two-game series with Laguna Hills next week. The teams play Wednesday at Laguna Hills (15-9, 9-9) and Thursday at Irvine. Laguna Hills also has a makeup game Monday with Sage Hill.

“The win gives us a shot at playoffs depending on next week’s games with Laguna Hills,” Cota said. 

UNIVERSITY 5, LAGUNA HILLS 2: The Trojans recorded a Pacific Coast League win Thursday to win the season series over the Hawks. Austen Barnett earned the win on the mound and Logan Rome, with a scoreless inning, earned the save for University (11-12-1, 5-10-1). Luke Weston was 2 for 3 with three RBI for the Trojans.

NORTHWOOD 14, SAGE HILL 0: Michael Lopez went 1 for 2 with a home run. Kaden Chan went 1 for 1 with four RBI and Kai Mo went 1 for with three RBI to lead second place Northwood (17-8, 13-5) to a Pacific Coast League victory.

TESORO 6, OCEAN VIEW 2: The Titans (17-8) won a non-league game Thursday. Grant Grinstead was 2 for 2 and pitched one inning. Jackson Kemmerer was 1 for 3 with two RBI, and Tanner Tobias was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI.
