IRVINE 3, UNIVERSITY 1: Irvine notched a key Pacific Coast League win to take the series from University. The Vaqueros moved into a tie for third place with Woodbridge. Four teams earn CIF automatic playoff berths.
“It was another great game, pitched will on both sides,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota. “It was a very important game for us and we played like it. I was very pleased with the way we responded after a tough game on Wednesday. Huge series win for us.”
Sullivan Spivey led Irvine (8-6-1, 7-5) offensively going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored while Owen Featherston was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Evan Tamayo earned the win, pitching 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run and one hit. Jack Flanagan pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one and Drake Brito got the save with two strikeouts in one inning.
University (7-8, 5-7) is tied for fifth place with Portola.
CORONA DEL MAR 12, NEWPORT HARBOR 2: The Sea Kings opened league play with a victory Friday. Stevie Jones earned the win for the Sea Kings. Ganon Overfelt, Vincent Menard, Nick Salmon and Carter Danz all had two hits for Coach Kevin McCaffrey’s team.
BUENA PARK 7, WHITTIER 1: The Coyotes (15-1) won their 13th game in a row. Jose Arcos was the winning pitcher. He allowed one unearned run and struck out four in six innings. Ryan Prescott pitched one inning, striking out two. Manuel Rivera was 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored, Neil Navarro was 1 for 2 with a walk, double and two RBI, Alex Blancas was 1 for 4 with three stolen bases and Rylan Prescott was 1 for 2 with two RBI and a walk.
PACIFICA 15, YORBA LINDA 1: The game, part of the Ryan Lemmon Tournament, was moved to Friday due to the expected rains coming Saturday and Sunday.
All games Saturday are postponed. Games are scheduled to played Monday with a revised schedule.
