Irvine and Placentia Bronco all-stars capture opening victories at super regional

Both the Irvine and Placentia Bronco 12-and-under all-star baseball teams opened the super regionals in Jurupa Valley Friday with victories. The two teams compete in the second round Saturday evening.

Irvine was the No. 3 seed out of the regional in Irvine while Placentia was the No. 2 seed. South Bay, the top seed out of the Irvine regional, opened with a 7-0 victory over Ramona.

IRVINE 10, HIGH DESERT 0 (Five innings): Isaac Chu led Irvine going 3 for 3 with an RBI while Devan Trivedi was 2 for 3 with two RBI. Irvine pitchers Anton Le and Waylon Stone held High Desert scoreless allowing only two hits through five innings.

Irvine, faces Tecolote Red, the top seed out of the Southwest Region, Saturday at 4:30. Tecolote Red opened with a 27-2 victory over Corona.

PLACENTIA 15, JURUPA 0 (Four innings): Placentia got strong pitching from Jacob Wang, who did not allow a hit in two innings and Logan Weiss, who allowed one hit in two innings.

Placentia had seven runs in the second inning, led by Grady Klovstad, Andrew Churney, Tyler Fritz, Caden Smith and Tristan Gerken, who all drove in runs.

Placentia plays Walnut Saturday at 5 p.m. in the second round.
