California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara endorsed Orange County State Senator Dave Min for Congress in California’s 47th Congressional District. In just one week since announcing his campaign, Min has received the endorsement of over 50 local Orange County elected officials, the California Attorney General, ASPIRE PAC which represents 19 members of Congress, and Congresswoman Kaite Porter who is vacating the 47th Congressional seat to run for U.S. Senate.
“During the height of the mortgage crisis, Dave Min fought fiercely for California home owners,” said California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “State Senator Min chose to hold Wall Street accountable, and stand up to the corporate special interest excess that hurt working families in Orange County. As the son of immigrants, Dave’s commitment to protecting and preserving the American Dream is the guiding principle of his public service. His business expertise, career as a Professor, Policy Director, and Legislative Advisor, all have focused on ensuring a competitive, fair marketplace where everyone, regardless of their background, has an equal shot. We need Dave in Congress and I am proud to endorse him.”
Ricardo Lara is California’s 8th Insurance Commissioner since voters created the elected position in 1988. As leader of the nation’s largest state consumer protection agency, he will protect Californians’ futures. His tenure has been recognized for the office’s work on protecting Californians from fraud, ensuring a fair insurance market, and creating the nation’s first climate insurance law. Raised in East Los Angeles by immigrant parents, Commissioner Ricardo Lara made history in 2018 by becoming the first openly gay person elected to statewide office in California’s history. Commissioner Lara previously served in the California Legislature, representing Assembly District 50 from 2010 to 2012 and Senate District 33 from 2012 to 2018.
Senator Min, the only Korean-American in the state legislature, has proven himself an incredibly effective legislative leader in the Senate, authoring 16 bills signed into law by the Governor, including leading legislation on hate crimes, gun violence prevention, family safety, and women’s reproductive rights. In the wake of the 2021 Huntington Beach Oil Spill, he stood up to the oil industry and led efforts to end offshore drilling. Min serves as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and as Senate Vice Chair of the Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. He previously chaired the Senate Cybersecurity Select Committee.
Before entering the State Senate, Min was a law professor at UC Irvine, where he taught and researched in the area of business law. He resides with his wife Jane, a UC Irvine law professor who specializes in domestic violence and family law, and their three children in Irvine. Dave is a native Californian, a product of California public schools who graduated from the Wharton School and Harvard Law School, and an Eagle Scout.
