ANAHEIM, Calif. (April 22, 2022) — You can help support foster care youth at Anaheim Public Library.
The Library continues to bring awareness to the needs of foster youth by holding a donation drive for backpacks and school supplies for Foster Care Awareness Month.
You can help support foster youth by donating new backpacks and schools supplies such as binders, paper, pencils, pens, glue, and calculators at your neighborhood Anaheim Public Library. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday, May 31, 2022.
Donations will be given to students at Orangewood Foundation’s Samueli Academy, a free charter high school, and to college scholarship recipients.
“Libraries help families extend their children’s interests,” City Librarian Audrey A. Lujan said. “But when home lives are disrupted, our job is to bring awareness to those needs and expand support.”
Residents looking for more ways to support foster youth can upgrade their library card at any branch to the “We’re Here For You” card design. Upgrading your card is donation-based and supports the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library.
Proceeds from the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library donations are given to the nonprofit Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County, which serves foster care youth.
The Library improved access to existing library services for foster youth by removing the guardian consent requirement and creating a tailored library card for foster care youth in 2021.
The foster youth library card is available at Anaheim Public Library for those 18 and younger living in the foster care system, in a group home, temporary living situation, in homelessness, or without proof of address. Youth can check out up to five items and will not accrue overdue fines.
Drop off donations at one of your Anaheim Public Library branches or upgrade your library card or tell your friends, family, and colleagues about the tailored library card for foster care youth.
