On April 19, Visit Newport Beach invites the local community and visitors alike to Balboa Pier to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest swing dance lesson.
Organized by the official Destination Marketing Organization for Newport Beach, the free public event aims to break the current record of 391 dancing pairs or 781 individuals. The former record was achieved by the Bletchley Park Trust in the United Kingdom back in 2018. Check-in will be at 10 a.m. and the record attempt will begin at 11:15 a.m. and will run for 30 minutes.
The swing dancing will be instructed and led by Atomic Ballroom, a local dance studio that teaches the art of partner and swing dance in Irvine. Providing live music for the event will be The Jonathon Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander. A Guinness World Records adjudicator will also be present to verify the record attempt.
The event, which will take place at Peninsula Park Athletic Field near Balboa Pier, was organized to celebrate Newport Beach’s 120-year anniversary and to commemorate Newport Beach’s legacy and history.
The legendary Rendezvous Ballroom at Balboa Pier was a staple of swing dancing nightlife for Orange County locals in the 1930s to 40s. Popular dances of that time include swing, boogie woogie, jitterbugging, and the Balboa. While the ballroom is no longer around after the famous building burned down in 1966, the event aims to pass the tradition of swing dancing to the next generation and to commemorate Newport Beach history.
