Painter Linda White presents work in a solo exhibition on display at Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion from Jan. 30 until Mar. 23, 2023. The exhibition, titled “Linda White: Four Decades of Painting from Geometry to Gesture,” is a survey exhibition of paintings, drawings, and prints from 1972 to 2020 by Linda White, who lives and works in Newport Beach, California. The exhibition demonstrates White’s artistic engagement with abstraction and representation, showing her inspiration from East Coast landscapes to Pacific Coast seascapes, all the while maintaining her abiding interest in bold colors.
For more than four decades, White has blended her affinities for variations of geometry and gesture, while in dialogue with Minimalism, New Image Painting, narrative figuration, and abstraction, inspired by the places she has lived and studied. After moving to Newport Beach in 1998, she shifted from the land-locked city of Princeton, New Jersey — where she had lived from nearly three decades — to one surrounded by the ocean. With a studio based on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, inspiration for her work over the next 25 years has come from views of the bay, the moored and passing boats, and the expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Linda White grew up in Long Beach, California, where she began her art experience with a painting class atCalifornia State University Long Beach in 1961. She continued with classes at the University of Minnesota in 1962, and printmaking and painting classes in Princeton, New Jersey in 1965; later having a solo exhibition in 1983 at the New Jersey State Museum. She received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. Recent solo exhibitions include those at Rainey Fine Art Gallery and Newport Beach Public Library. Recent group exhibitions include those at Los Angeles Art Association, Douglass College Library at Rutgers University, and Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, PA.
Linda White: Four Decades of Painting from Geometry to Gesture was organized by the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, Orange Coast College. Support for the exhibition and the gallery at OCC was made possible by The Rallis Foundation, Yasuko & John Bush, Sylvia Impert, Orange Coast College Foundation, and Associated Students of Orange Coast College.
