Santa Ana – Dispatchers at the Orange County Fire Authority’s Emergency Command Center received multiple calls for a fire in the 1000 block of W. Stevens Ave. at 7:00 this morning.
Truck 76 was the first-arriving unit and found a second floor apartment fully involved in fire threatening adjacent units.
Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack on the fire, and completed searches to ensure everyone was out.
Due to coordinated firefighting with the OCFA’s partners from Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue, the blaze was knocked down in 10 minutes.

There were no injuries reported and the cause is under investigation.
Assistance was also provided by the Santa Ana Police Department.
Common Causes of Apartment Fires
- Cooking-related incidents– Unattended stoves or ovens are the leading cause of residential fires. Grease fires can spread quickly if water is used to extinguish them.
- Electrical issues – Faulty wiring, overloaded outlets, or damaged cords. Space heaters plugged into extension cords instead of directly into the wall are common hazards.
- Heating equipment – Portable heaters placed too close to flammable materials. Chimneys or furnaces not properly maintained can also ignite fires.
- Smoking materials – Cigarettes or cigars left smoldering on furniture or bedding.
- Candles – Left burning unattended or near curtains, paper, or other flammable items.
- Appliances and electronics – Malfunctioning devices or improper use of power strips can lead to overheating and ignition.
- Arson or accidental human error – Intentional ignition or careless handling of flammable substances.
Here are tips for preventing and dealing with apartment fires:
- Never leave cooking unattended
Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave, turn off the stove. - Keep flammable items away from heat sources
Curtains, paper, and bedding should be at least three feet from heaters or stoves. - Use electrical devices safely
Avoid overloading outlets. Plug space heaters directly into the wall, not extension cords. - Inspect cords and appliances
Replace damaged cords immediately. Unplug appliances when not in use. - Be cautious with candles
Keep them away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended. Consider flameless candles. - Don’t smoke indoors
If you smoke, do so outside. Use deep, sturdy ashtrays and make sure cigarettes are fully out. - Test smoke alarms monthly
Replace batteries yearly and the entire unit every 10 years. - Have a fire extinguisher accessible
Know how to use it and keep it in the kitchen or near exits. - Create and practice an escape plan
Know two ways out of every room and keep exits clear.
