The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning and Peter Sohn’s “Elemental” gained the nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.
He told KTLA 5’s Sam Rubin that he learned of the big news via text message.
“(I’m) super excited. Sam, thank you so much for the love and (I’m) very proud of our Pixar teams for all the work they did to bring fire and water to life,” he exclaimed.
The summer sleeper hit’s nomination comes after it garnered a Golden Globes nomination as well.
While Sohn won’t call the Oscar nod vindicating, he will note that it’s “grown the heart several sizes.”
“We’re just so proud of the connection that we made with the audience,” he explained.
This project is deeply personal for Sohn, who has been with Pixar since 2000.
“I fell in love with someone that wasn’t Korean and my grandmother’s dying words were like ‘Marry Korean!’ All of this sort of personal stuff got into the film.”
The film is a cross-cultural love story, but also a thank you to Sohn’s, and the crew’s, parents.
“The heart of it has always been about thanking our parents for the sacrifices that they made,” he said.
“My parents came from Korea in the late ’60s to the United States and they had no money, they didn’t speak any English,” he explained. “They made a life for my brother and I. We’ve been so grateful for everything that they’ve done and so many people on the crew shared those same feelings and those stories and that was one of the main things we started to infuse into the film.”
You can stream “Elemental” on Disney+ now.
The 96th Academy Awards are on March 10.
