Audiences were first introduced to Eddie Murphy’s character Axel Foley 40 years ago, now he’s back for the fourth installment of the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” will introduce a new generation to Murphy’s iconic character as the last film, “Beverly Hills Cop III” was released in 1994. While there’s a 30-year gap between the third and fourth film, Murphy picks back up right where he left off.
“When you’re in a movie like this, you know that stays around forever and ever, when we get on the set together it just flows,” the “Nutty Professor” actor explained to Scott “Movie Mantz.”
“When we started filming it felt like we hadn’t left,” said John Aston who reprises his role as John Taggart.
Actor Judge Reinhold is also back as Detective Billy Rosewood.
“It’s not like we went and dug up something that had been buried,” he said about the new movie. “The movies were lucky enough to be in a celebrated franchise that’s continued to play so it felt like a continuation.”
The film also brings in fresh faces like Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Bacon’s appearance is significant as Murphy’s always felt he was one of his contemporaries seeing as both men had their big breakout roles in 1984, Murphy with “Beverly Hills Cop” and Bacon in “Footloose.”
“I’ve always been a fan of his. He’s just been this solid actor for all these years,” Murphy said.
Bacon calls the franchise Murphy’s movie and says it continues to be.
“I think that the reason why you go and you make four movies like that is because Axel Foley, and Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, is just something that you just want to see again and again,” Bacon explained.
The film’s director Mark Molloy found inspiration from past movies while marrying it with a modern world.
As for Scott, who still watches the original movie pretty frequently, he couldn’t hold back his praise of the film.
“It’s really, really good,” Scott exclaimed on the KTLA 5 Morning News. “I walked out and told the people at Netflix this is the best ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ since the first one.”
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” will start streaming on Netflix on July 3.
