Da’Hawaii Seniors Club’s Program Co-Vice Presidents Sherrie Dixon and Donna Ray planned for a variety of activities at the club’s November 10, 2022, meeting at the Cerritos Senior Center. They prepared a special turkey craft for Thanksgiving suggested by Kyle Izumihara, planned to honor Veterans and November birthday celebrants, elect new officers for 2023, arrange for the Angklung Group to perform, and have members participate with Kanikapila (singing with instruments) to complete the day’s activities.

The meeting started with the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America led by Larry Anduha and the singing of Hawai’I Pono’I led by Frank Ishii. Hedy Anduha then led members in singing of “Happy Birthday” in Hawaiian and English to November birthday celebrants Larry Anduha, Winona Chang, Bette Kurihara, and John Yanagihara.

As part of the business part of the meeting, President Carmelita Tiongson asked Sergeant-at-Arms Larry Anduha to be the Installing Officer, assisted by Hedy Anduha. Installed as 2023 Board members for Da’ Hawaii Seniors Club were the following members: Co-Presidents Carmelita Tiongson and Ann Kho; Co-1st VP’s for Programs, Sherrie Dixon and Donna Ray; Co-2nd VP’s for Membership, Myrna Matsuno and Janie Aguirre;Co-3rd VP’s for Public Performance, Pilar De La Fuente, Carol Roxas, and Liberty Santiago; Recording Secretaries Amy Tong and Annie Kelly; Treasurer Richard Chu; Refreshment Co-Chairs Remy Convento, Yolanda Andrade and Bette Kurihara; Ohana Care Co-Chairs, Georgina Onaga and Susan Stern; Sergeant-at-Arms, Gilbert Aguirre and Larry Anduha; and Audio Techs, Howard Koga and Ken Matsuno.

Carmelita will be serving her fourth term in 2023 as Co-President or President and thanked all past board members for helping the club for so many years. She especially thanked members who are not officially serving on the board in 2023 but still support and participate in the club’s activities, including Hedy Anduha, Frances McCormick, John Yanagihara, Frank and Gladys Yoshii, Edna and David Ethington, Pete Kahele, Mary Jane Fujimura, Gail Nagaoka, and Marion Tesoro.

Since November 11 was scheduled to be celebrated as Veterans’ Day in the U.S. Carmelita asked all veterans in the club to stand and be recognized. Five club members and a guest stood and were recognized. The five members who were veterans were Air Force members Larry Anduha and Ed McCormick, Army veteran Frank Yoshii, and Navy veteran Calvin Kunimoto. The guest veteran was Elaine Lau. Elaine served in the Air Force as a Captain and a Dentist. She was part of the Angklung Group.

The Angklung Group is a group of 16 club members, and other interested persons, who learned to play the Indonesian musical instruments called the Angklungs that are made of bamboo. Club member Ann Kho taught the group how to play the Angklung and directed the group as they played four songs in honor of Veterans’ Day and Thanksgiving. The songs included: God Bless America, Thank You Lord for Your Blessings, Edelweiss, and Aloha O’e. Larry Anduha sang a verse of the Thank You Lord for Your Blessings song and invited members to join in singing the song. Thanks to the Angklung Group, everyone enjoyed special refreshments of Egg Pies and apple cider with spices.

The November 10th meeting ended with members singing different songs as part of kanikapila (singing with ukuleles or guitars). The club’s hula dancers joined in the fun by dancing hulas. They were led by Hedy Anduha and Frances McCormick, as they ended the festivities by doing the hula to E Huli Makou with singing led by Howard and Julie Koga. Larry Anduha and Frank Yoshii led the singing of Hawai’i Aloha and Aloha O’e accompanied by Pete Kahele on his ukulele as members and guests sang and said Aloha, until they meet again in December.
