Da’ Hawaii Seniors Club gathered at the Cerritos Senior Center on Thursday, October 27, 2022, to celebrate Halloween with surprise bags of candy treats, word games, and a pumpkin decorating activity prepared by Program Co-VP’s Sherrie Dixon and Donna Ray. After Larry Anduha led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America, Frank Yoshii led the singing of “Hawaii Pono ‘I, and Hedy Anduha led club members in singing “Happy Birthday” in English and Hawaiian to the club’s October birthday celebrants.

As part of the business part of the meeting, President Carmelita Tiongson recognized and thanked all the dedicated members who have served on Da’ Hawaii Seniors Club’s board for 2022. It takes many members to do all that is needed to keep the club as a wonderful place to enjoy food, friendship, fun, music, line dances, and hulas, like a large Ohana, a family.

Carmelita thanked the following members of her Board for generous sharing of their time and talents serving as board members for 2022, with most of them also serving as board members in 2021: 1st VP’s Program, Sherrie Dixon and Donna Ray; 2nd Co-VP’s Membership, Mryna Matsuno and Janie Aguirre; 3rd Co-VP Public Performance, Hedy Anduha, Carol Roxas, and Liberty Santiago; Recording Co-Secretaries, Amy Tong and Annie Kelly; Treasurer, Richard Chu; Refreshment Committee, Marion Tesoro, Mary Jane Fujimura, and Gail Nagaoka; Ohana Care, Georgina Onaga and Susan Stern; Sergeant at Arms, Gilbert Aguirre and Larry Anduha; and Audio Techs, Howard Koga and Ken Matsuno. Many of the past board members were nominated to serve again in 2023 and will be officially elected at the club’s November meeting.

Carmelita also wants to acknowledge and thank past board members Frances McCormick and John Yanagihara who served as 3rd Co-VP’s for Public Performances for many years. John was also very helpful as an Audio Tech as needed at meetings. She especially thanked Richard Chu for his service as Treasurer and his willingness to continue as Treasurer while he is physically able. He has offered to help train a member to replace him as Treasurer. Carmelita said that there are still openings on the board for 2023, especially for a Co-President for herself, two Program Co-VP’s, one Audio Tech, and Refreshment Committee members. Interested members are asked to contact Carmelita or Myrna Matsuno at their e-mail addresses listed below.

The October 27, 2022, club meeting ended with Kanikapila (singing with musical instruments) with Pete Kahele playing his ukulele, and Frank Yoshii playing his guitar. Larry Anduha and Carmelita Tiongson joined Frank and Pete as they sang different songs and led members singing songs from the club’s red and yellow song book. Members applauded as the club’s hula dancers joined in dancing the hula to “Hanalei Moon” as a finale for the October meeting.
