After a design-and-build period extended by problems with utility connections (electricity and sewer), the City of Cypress was finally able to celebrate the opening of its newest park, Lexington Park, on the southeast corner of the intersection of Lexington Drive and Cerritos Avenue, on the border with Los Alamitos. (Lexington Drive turns into Denni Street north of Cerritos Avenue.)
A parking lot wraps around most of three sides of the Park, with entrance and exit from both Lexington Drive (northbound only) and Cerritos Avenue (eastbound only). A drop-off area just west of the Cerritos Avenue entrance will make a quick stop easy without blocking eastbound traffic.
Orange County Breeze visited the finished Park for the first time during the week of Spring Break, and found enthusiastic patrons making extensive use of the available facilities. Although the Park has two athletic fields — one synthetic turf and one natural turf — only the synthetic turf field was in use. According to posted signs, the natural turf field was “closed for maintenance” and Park patrons were not violating the restriction.
A sheltered play area on the west side offered a large number of pieces of playground equipment, and a lot of youngsters were clambering all over them. The special favorite (judging by the number of kids on it) was a conical multi-level spinner or merry-go-round. There are nearby picnic tables for adults to gather at to supervise playing children.
Along the northern rim of the athletic fields are picnic pavilions that can be reserved by Cypress residents. In addition to shade and picnic tables, the pavilions offer a barbecue, hot coal disposal container, and recycling and regular trash receptacles.
The athletic fields themselves are separated by a concrete walkway. Spectator seating is available on the east and west side of the fields, but not between.
A flagpole and commemorative plaque are in the northwest, between parking and bathroom facilities.
In the far southeast corner is a multi-use court that supports drop-in play of volleyball, pickle ball, and basketball according to a schedule posted at the court.
Along the southern rim of the athletic fields is a long row of individual outdoor exercise equipment. Each piece of equipment has a description of its use, and a caution that children’s use of the equipment should be supervised by an adult.
Wrapping around the entire park is an easy-on-the-feet rubberized walking trail wide enough for runners and walkers to easily pass one another.
AYSO (youth soccer) and Friday Night Lights (youth flag football) are expected to make extensive use of the athletic fields, and of onsite rentable storage facilities.
