Baseball coaches in the Pacific Coast League have continued their creative scheduling this season with Saturday games each week.

Last season, due to the coronavirus pandemic and a late start, teams played a league-only schedule.

This season, the league’s seven teams are playing a full schedule including 18 league games, which typically includes a game on Saturday unless a team has a bye.

Six of the teams will be action Saturday in a tripleheader at the Great Park Baseball Stadium. There is no admission charge.

If Saturday’s game between Woodbridge and Beckman is any indication, the plan is a hit with fans who nearly filled up the grandstands at Beckman for the 11 a.m. game.

“I love them, it’s great for the fans that they can come out and you don’t have that rush of school and the bus and getting there on time,” said Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle. “Especially early in the year, you’re not fighting daylight. What would be doing right now if we weren’t doing baseball?

“With our league playing 18 games, we have to play three games in a week so if you add Saturday into the equation, it makes it a lot easier.”
