The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning following a high-speed pursuit that began in Buena Park and ended in Oceanside, according to the Buena Park Police Department.
The incident started at approximately 12:47 a.m., when Buena Park Police attempted to stop a gray 2005 Cadillac CTS for a traffic violation. The driver refused to yield, sparking a chase that continued southbound on Interstate 5, where CHP officers assumed primary responsibility.
The pursuit lasted over an hour and spanned multiple freeways before entering Oceanside CHP jurisdiction. Officers used legal intervention to stop the suspect vehicle on southbound I-5. The driver, reportedly armed with a handgun, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Moments later, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Authorities closed the freeway for several hours as the suspect hid in a large brush area between the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5, north of Harbor Drive. Despite repeated commands from CHP and Buena Park PD, the suspect refused to surrender and remained uncooperative.
The suspect was taken into custody around 7:40 a.m. and transported to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries. During the investigation, officers recovered an unserialized firearm—commonly referred to as a “ghost gun”—from the suspect. No officers were injured during the incident.
