On Monday, March 27, 2023, at approximately 10:54 p.m., a 33-year-old San Diego resident was involved in a crash on Interstate 5 southbound, south of Beach Boulevard, involving the vehicle he was a passenger in and one other vehicle.
Following the crash, both drivers and the male passenger exited their respective vehicles and began to exchange information in the #2 lane. Approximately one minute later, a third vehicle crashed into the two vehicles, both drivers, and the male passenger. The male passenger was pronounced deceased on scene due to the injuries sustained in the second crash. Both drivers from the first crash were transported to the hospital with minor to major injuries sustained in the second crash. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Westminster Area is handling the investigation.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, however impairment is not suspected as a factor in this crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or the events leading up to it, is encouraged to contact the CHP Westminster Area office during business hours at (714) 622-3600.
