Join music icons The Lettermen and special guest Debby Boone in concert at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA) on Sunday, January 29 at 3:00 p.m. Comedian John Wing hosts while the Les Brown Alumni Big Band and Southern California native singer Nicole Kubis provide musical accompaniment. In the 1960s, The Way You Look Tonight launched THE LETTERMEN forever into music stardom. The ballad was melodic and romantic, a departure from the Rock ‘n’ Roll sound of the time, but it quickly climbed to No. 13 on the Billboard chart. The group’s follow-up, When I Fall in Love, hit the Top 10, firmly establishing the group as the most romantic singing ensemble of the era.
The band’s lineup has undergone changes over the course of its 50-year-plus career, but The Lettermen continues to win over fans with a long list of catchy hits, including Put Your Head on My Shoulder, Goin’ Out of My Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, Come Back Silly Girl, Hurt So Bad, and A Song for Young Love. To date, The Lettermen boasts 18 Gold albums and more than 100 million records sold. The lineup currently consists of Tony Butala, Donovan Tea, and Bobby Poynton.
The Lettermen has toured with George Burns, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope and has worked with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Gleason, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Jimmy Durante, Debbie Reynolds, Sam Cooke, and Sammy Davis, Jr. The trio was a regular on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Red Skelton Show, and The Hollywood Palace. The band also appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, Shindig, and Hullabaloo.
Grammy winner DEBBY BOONE lit up the world with You Light Up My Life, which became an overnight sensation. The single shot to No. One and was named on Billboard’s list of “All-Time Top-Charting Songs.” The ballad won an Oscar, and Boone garnered a 1977 Grammy for “Best New Artist of the Year.” She claimed two more Grammys for 1980’s With My Song I Will Praise Him and 1984’s Keep the Flame Burning.
Boone’s 2013 album Swing This is a composite of the music, stories, and glamour of the Golden Age of 1960s Vegas, when her father, legend Pat Boone, was headlining at the Sands and Sahara hotels. Her Reflections of Rosemary album pays tribute to her late mother-in-law – legendary singer Rosemary Clooney. The collection – which includes Blue Skies, Mood Indigo, Time After Time, and In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning – has been showered with critical acclaim. The New York Observer praised Boone’s voice, describing it as “sunny warmth that is smooth, honest and true.”
Boone has starred in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on Broadway and in the Lincoln Center’s The Sound of Music, which was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. She also appeared in Grease, Meet Me in St. Louis, and The King and I. “In performance, Boone is remarkably present, emotionally engaged,” hailed CNN.
