Hollywood is mourning the loss of beloved actor Donald Sutherland who died at 88.
Some big names have taken to social media to pay tribute to the legendary star.
Actor Rob Lowe honored his former costar. The two appeared in the 2004 horror miniseries “Salem’s Lot.”
“Today we lost one of our greatest actors, Donald Sutherland,” Lowe wrote in a post to X, formerly Twitter. “It was my honor to work with him many years ago, and I will never forget his charisma and ability. If you want a master class in acting, watch him in ‘Ordinary People.’ My condolences to Kiefer.”
“Aww man. farewell, Donald Sutherland,” actor Elijah Wood wrote on X alongside a photo of a young Sutherland.
Actor and director Ron Howard also took to the social media platform to remember when he worked with Sutherland in “Backdraft.”
“#RIPDonaldSutherland,” he penned. “I was blessed to direct him in #Backdraft. One of the most intelligent, interesting & engrossing film actors of all time. Incredible range, creative courage & dedication to serving the story & the audience with supreme excellence.”
The British Academy Film Awards honored Sutherland’s” long-standing career.”
“Sutherland was nominated for a BAFTA for Don’t Look Now/Steelyard Blues in 1974,” the organization posted to X.
His “The Leisure Seeker” costar, Helen Mirren, issued a statement obtained by Variety saying: “Donald Sutherland was one of the smartest actors I ever worked with. He had a wonderful enquiring brain, and a great knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity, and with a seriousness about his profession as an actor. This all made him into the legend of film that he became. He was my colleague and became my friend. I will miss his presence in this world.”
Sutherland’s son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, announced news of his father’s passing in a post to X on Thursday afternoon.
“With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” he wrote. “I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Actor Ben Stiller commented on the post saying, “Sending love and so much respect.”
“Love to you Kiefer – and to your family. Donald is a gem,” wrote actress Frances Fisher.
“Stacey and I send you our deepest sympathies .. Your dad was indeed singular,” actor Henry Winkler wrote.
Sutherland passed away in Miami, Florida after a long illness. He leaves behind a wife, his five children and four grandchildren.
His family will privately hold a celebration of life in the near future.
