Now in its 40th year, the California Black Health Network (CBHN) announced the expansion of the Black Health Network, the organization’s flagship network of health equity leaders, professionals, policymakers, individuals, and partners working together to ensure that Black Californians live a life free from violence, racism, and health inequities. The newly launched tiered membership structure offers an array of benefits, individualized to meet each member’s unique goals. Benefits include advocacy training, mentorship programs, professional development, and capacity-building workshops, member spotlight, peer networking opportunities, discounts on events, job boards, and more.
“Health disparities run deep and there are no quick fixes to the medical system that has frankly failed Black Americans historically,” says Jamila Jabulani, Network Membership Manager, CBHN. “That’s where the Black Health Network comes in. By working together as a virtual community, we can promote access, justice, and health while removing the barriers Black Californians face in their everyday lives.”
CBHN is the only Black-led, statewide organization dedicated to advancing health equity for all African Americans and Black Immigrants. CBHN has accomplished the following over the past few years:
- Launched the Black Health Agenda, to identify key issues that negatively impact life expectancy and devise actionable solutions to improve the health and well-being of Black Californians.
- Enrolled close to 1,000 individuals into healthcare coverage through Covered CA.
- Established a robust partnership with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to launch the Black Beauty Brand Project, which provides Black consumers with much-needed resources to identify non-toxic Black-owned beauty brands that promote health self-care and protect the prosperity of Black women.
- Educated over 2,000 individuals across the state to improve health literacy of Black Californians through the Health4Life series and Health Equity Forums.
- Recognized by the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce as the Nonprofit of the Year in 2022.
“We started the Black Health Network in 2021 with a vision to create a community where people who work every day to advance health equity for the Black community could come together to connect, communicate, collaborate and network virtually and thanks to our more than 350 individual and organizational members across the state, that vision is now a reality,” says Rhonda Smith, Executive Director, CBHN. “With the creation and cultivation of a space for collective action, power building, learning, and networking, we are igniting a black health movement across California to improve the health and well-being of Black Californians – for us, about us, and by us.”
