Working to support emergency survivors not just in California but across the globe, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is sending life-saving medical supplies to aid Ukrainian refugees.
A shipment of supplies including a 50-bed field medical station, oxygen concentrators and personal protective equipment, is being sent to Direct Relief International, a California-based humanitarian aid organization who will fly the supplies to Poland to meet the immediate needs of hundreds of thousands affected by the invasion, including people who are displaced from their homes and are crossing the border out of Ukraine.
“In these extraordinary times, California stands with the people of Ukraine and will continue to work to meet immediate needs and save lives both at home and abroad,” said Cal OES Chief Deputy Director Christina Curry.
Governor Gavin Newsom today visited the state’s disaster logistics warehouse in Solano County to help pack these emergency relief supplies.
“California is united in our support for Ukraine,” said Governor Newsom. “Throughout this crisis, the state and non-profits, businesses, the faith community, and individuals across California have stepped up in solidarity with the Ukrainian community, a heartening reminder of our common humanity. We’ll continue to support the brave people of Ukraine and reaffirm our commitment to fundamental rights and freedoms around the world.”
The supplies packaged include:
- One hundred oxygen concentrators.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) to supply refugee camps.
- A California Medical Station that includes beds, wound and IV kits, a defibrillator, wheelchairs, and other necessary supplies.
The field medical station, concentrators and PPE resources are available because California has built a sustainable, reliable, logistics pipeline.
Separately, Cal OES is working with state and local law enforcement agencies to identify and supply ballistics vests, goggles, and helmets to help those impacted by the conflict occurring in Ukraine. These supplies are expected to be sent in the coming days. California and Ukraine share close ties and the state is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations in the country. California has a long history of welcoming Ukrainian and other refugees.
Even with this latest distribution of equipment, California still maintains a robust stockpile of hundreds of millions of pieces of PPE and medical supplies that can be rapidly deployed during wildfires, earthquakes or another COVID-19 surge to help keep Californians safe.
