The Chief of Police is one of the most critical executive management positions within the City’s organizational structure. Following the previous Chief’s retirement, City Manager Aaron France immediately appointed Captain Frank Nunes as Interim Police Chief. After careful consideration and exceptional performance over the past six months, the City of Buena Park is proud to announce the appointment of Frank E. Nunes to Police Chief effective October 1, 2022.

Chief Nunes brings over 25 years of law enforcement and leadership experience to Buena Park. Following his six years of service in the United States Marine Corps, he began his law enforcement career at the Sierra Madre Police Department and joined the City of Buena Park as a lateral police officer on April 1, 1997.

Over the course of his career with the Buena Park Police Department, Chief Nunes has worked numerous assignments as he rose through the ranks from police officer to police captain, including patrol, detective bureau, traffic bureau, gang suppression, SWAT Team, and administrative services. He is also committed to the Buena Park community and participates in many community activities, including Walk-a-Child to School, Read Across America, and Red Ribbon Week. He also serves on the Buena Park Boys & Girls Club Board.

“Chief Nunes’ dedication to our community has been apparent over his 25-year career with the Department,” said City Manager Aaron France. “His top priority has been, and continues to be, transparency, accountability, and excellence.”

Additionally, he has received countless accolades from community partners and supervisors within the organization that include Top Cop Awards, Distinguished Service Award, Supervisor of the Year and two Lifesaving Awards. These accolades display his continued commitment to service and his dedication to the Buena Park community.

“I am excited to assume the responsibility of leading the Buena Park Police Department. We are committed to making Buena Park as safe as possible for those who live, work, and visit our city. We are an organization that breeds a culture of ownership in all that we do. Rest assured the Buena Park Police Department will be committed to serving our community with excellence and pride.”
