Hi Seal Beach,
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Thursday, Aug. 8, is recognized as National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day! Started by a Pennsylvanian man, who was apparently overflowing with an abundance of zucchini from his garden, decided to surprise his neighbors by sneaking onto their porches during the late-night hours and delivering his harvest (https://www.almanac.com/zucchini-fertility-spawns-annual-holiday). Although I love zucchini, I would be hesitant to eat anything left on my porch overnight, especially without knowing the source.
Since we’re on the topic of porches, and people sneaking onto them, we thought we’d share some safety tips to keep the front of your home secure.
• Install Quality Lighting: Ensure your porch and surrounding areas are well-lit with motion-sensor lights to deter potential intruders.
• Use Smart Security Cameras: Set up security cameras that provide real-time alerts and video footage. Place them in visible areas to discourage suspicious activity.
• Secure Your Packages: Consider using a package lockbox or asking neighbors to collect your packages if you’re not home. Many delivery services offer secure delivery options.
• Lock Your Doors and Windows: Always lock your doors and windows, even when you’re at home. Use deadbolts and consider adding security bars to windows.
• Keep Your Porch Clear: Remove any valuable items or clutter from your porch that might attract thieves. This includes tools, bicycles, and other personal items.
• Install a Peephole or Video Doorbell: Use a peephole or video doorbell to see who is at your door before opening it.
Many video doorbells also record footage and send alerts to your phone.
• Trim Landscaping: Keep bushes and trees trimmed back to eliminate hiding spots for potential intruders. Maintain clear visibility of your porch from the street.
• Use Timers for Lights: Use timers for your porch lights to give the appearance that someone is home, even when you’re away.
• Communicate with Delivery Services: Leave specific instructions for delivery drivers about where to place packages or require a signature upon delivery to ensure they are not left unattended.
• Secure Your Wi-Fi Network: Ensure your home Wi-Fi network is secure with a strong password to prevent unauthorized access to smart security devices.
• Reinforce Entry Points: Reinforce doors and windows with additional security features like strike plates, door braces, and window locks.
By following these safety tips, you can help protect your porch and home from potential threats.
