Blueberry Hugs Laguna Beach Boutique Showcases Handmade Ceramics and Artisan Goods

What began as a personal project to share the joy Angel Zhang felt when using artisanal tableware at home has grown into a boutique that feels akin to a gallery. “The store’s name comes from my daughter’s nickname, Blueberry, and symbolizes warmth, love, and family,” Zhang says. “My hope is that every guest leaves not only with a beautiful handmade object, but also with a feeling of warmth and inspiration that stays with them.”

Zhang was drawn to Laguna Beach’s artistic spirit, ocean air, and relaxed lifestyle, which she felt aligned with the store’s vision of slowing down and enjoying handmade craft. “Many visitors pause at the entrance, take a deep breath, and say the store feels calming; almost like a small sanctuary,” Zhang says. Customers can shop pieces such as handmade cups and mugs (which they can fill with tea or coffee to sip on while they browse the store), artist exhibition pieces, and seasonal items, including holiday-themed plates. Each item is made by independent ceramicists, glassmakers, and artisans from Japan, China, and more. “The wabi-sabi textures, playful colors, and subtle imperfections make each piece feel alive,” Zhang says. “Many of our kitchenware items reflect cultural traditions … yet adapt beautifully to modern homes.”

Keep an eye on Blueberry Hugs’ website and Instagram @blueberryhugs_tableware for events such as ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) workshops. This December, the boutique will host a group exhibition featuring three Japanese artists who have created exclusive pieces for the store.
