Early Monday morning Disney released the first teaser trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King,” a prequel to the 2019 film “The Lion King,” based on the classic 1994 animated film.
“A lion who would change our lives forever,” the caption on Instagram read. The photorealistic film tells the origin story of Simba’s father, Mufasa, and his brother Taka, later known as Scar. The story is told by Rafiki to Kiara, the daughter of Simba and Nala.
Jeff Nathanson wrote the Barry Jenkins-directed film which consists of a star-studded cast. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. will voice the young Mufasa and Scar. Seth Rogan returns as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner is back as his buddy, Timon, and Donald Glover returns as King Simba. Thandiwe Newton, John Kani and Mads Mikkelsen also provide their talents to the cast.
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprises her role as Queen Nala and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter will play her daughter on-screen as Kiara.
Lin-Manuel Miranda will provide original songs for the film’s soundtrack. It’s not known if Beyoncé will provide her vocal prowess to the movie. In 2019, she curated her own soundtrack called “The Lion King: The Gift.” She later turned it into a film called “Black is King,” which streamed on Disney+ during the pandemic.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” hits theaters on Dec. 20.
