Beckman High School’s boys water polo team defeated Portola 8-7 Thursday to capture the championship of the Pacific Coast League tournament.

“We played very well and are peaking at the right time,” said Beckman Coach Tijmen Egtberts. “Defensively we play at a very high level and offensively we have a lot of firepower. We knew going into the final that Portola was a tough team with a lot of grit. We knew that, at some point, they would go on a run and the game would be really close.

“We went up 4-0 playing tremendous defense. Then we started turning the ball over, allowing Portola to gain some momentum and they brought it back to 5-4. We went on another run and got up 7-4, but we knew Portola had some left to give. They tied it 7-7 and with about 30 seconds left Tyler Huynh scored the game winner.”

AJ Sexton had three goals. Dane Warren two goals and Zander Huynh and Tyler Huynh had one goal each to lead Beckman.

Bradley Eisman led Beckman with five field blocks.

Beckman (18-10 overall) finished 7-0 during the regular PCL season. The Patriots will find out Saturday morning their seed in the CIF playoffs.

Beckman was third and Portola (21-7) fourth in this week’s CIF Division 2 rankings released Monday.
