Beckman High School’s boys volleyball team showed some early season promise, capturing the Tesoro Varsity Championships title Monday.

The Patriots, coached by Darin McBain, defeated Canyon 2-0 in the quarterfinals; Mater Dei 2-0 in the semifinals and Newport Harbor 2-1 in the final.

Beckman’s Ryan Graves was tourney MVP and Luke Morrison was all-tournament.

“Harbor really took it to us in the first set, but we made a couple of lineup changes, regrouped and took an early lead in the second,” McBain said. “Momentum switched to our side and we were able to hold off a late charge to win that set.

“We got out to a great start in the third set and had to hold off another rally late.”

McBain is optimistic about his squad.

“We returned our core of five guys from last year’s CIF and state semifinal team and are working to fill those other two spots the best we can,” he said.

“My guys are very resilient. Nothing really fazes them. They are calm through adversity and it really paid off in a great win for our program.”

Noah Lee, Jack Graves and Noah Huang were huge contributors for the Patriots in securing the title, McBain added.
