Beckman High School’s boys volleyball team captured the championship of the Hawaii Invitational Tournament, defeating Moanalua 24-26, 25-19, 15-13 in the gold final capping a successful three-day run.

“Great trip to a Hawaii last week for a lot of reasons, as you can imagine,” Beckman Coach Darin McBain said Monday. “Winning it for the first time was nice. We had lost in the semis to the eventual champion the last two trips out there. We were tested in the finals by Moanalua, for sure.

“We couldn’t close out the first set after building a late 3-point lead, but we battled back behind Luke Morrison’s heavy swings and timely blocking to take set two. We got off to a terribly slow start in the third set, finding ourselves down 2-7.”

But then the Patriots got on track.

“Three consecutive blocks from senior middle blocker Jack Frame changed the momentum and the Josiah Suhr to Luke Morrison connection took over down the stretch to win 15-13,” McBain said.

Suhr, a junior setter, was named tourney MVP. Frame and Robert Linker, a sophomore libero, were all-tournament selections, McBain said.

Beckman then got back into league play.

“Upon our return, we had a huge, must-win match against San Clemente,” McBain said. “They had beaten us in four sets three weeks earlier, but we were able to flip that around this time to beat them in four.”

Morrison had 20 kills, five aces and five blocks in the league win. Frame had seven kills and eight blocks. Gavin Looney, a junior outside hitter, had 12 kills and two blocks.

“We are now tied San Clemente for the league lead and both control our own destinies moving forward,” McBain said. “Our path will not be easy, however, as we have two matchups with Tesoro to close out the season. They can beat anyone when they are on.”
