This weekend, the Laguna Arts Museum is inviting hundreds of volunteers to be a part of artist Ana Teresa Fernández’s “Social Sculpture SOS” on Nov. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The event will take place on Main Beach and will ask up to 800 participants to spell “SOS” (meaning “Save Our Seas”) in morse code with Fernández’s handheld circular mirrors.
The installation is a part of the Laguna Arts Museum’s 13th annual Art + Nature celebration week, where outdoor art exhibits and activities are available for free for anyone interested in exploring and participating in Laguna Beach art. The yearly celebration was created by the museum to celebrate “the dynamic exchange between artistic expression and environmental awareness.”
Fernández’s sculptural installation, titled “An Ocean in a Drop” is on display now through Nov. 10 on Main Beach. Visitors and locals are able to interact with the artist at the “We Are Water” photography station daily from 3 to 5 p.m. “SOS” will be the final part of the installation, which will imitate the motion of the waves and highlight the urgent need for people to support the ecosystems of the ocean.
Born in Tampico, Mexico, Fernández grew up in California and lives in San Francisco. Syntax and language play significant roles in her artworks as she is a student of linguistics and speaks five languages. Utilizing several art mediums such as photography, video, sculpture, and painting, Fernández tells stories that intersect place, person, and politics in order to create a universal dialect.
You can sign up for free to be a part of Fernández’s social sculpture “SOS” through the Laguna Arts Museum website. A video recording will later be displayed in the Laguna Arts Museum lobby for anyone who misses the event.
