The Aquarium’s staff is mourning the loss of the penguin chick, which had been in critical care for the past two months. During its early stages of development in the nest with its parents, the penguin chick had lost weight and appeared lethargic.
Testing revealed blood chemistry changes that prompted our veterinary and animal care staff to begin supportive treatments in a specialized care area at the Aquarium. Staff members had worked around the clock caring for the sick penguin chick. The chick’s conditioned had recently worsened despite all efforts, and it was determined that euthanasia was the most humane choice. This was a painful decision that was not made lightly.
The penguin chick, which hatched in late May, is beloved by the staff and will be greatly missed.
