ANAHEIM, Calif. (September 9, 2021) – On September 5, 2021, at 9:22 p.m. Anaheim police officers responded to a residence in the 1700 block of N. Holbrook St. to investigate a report of a 17-year-old boy who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located the boy inside the residence. He was then transported to a local trauma center. On the morning of September 9, 2021, the boy, an Anaheim resident, succumbed to his wounds.

During their initial response to the scene, officers contacted Zachary Pickrell, 18, of Anaheim. Pickrell identified himself as a friend of the boy and said they had been the victims of a drive-by shooting. Homicide detectives responded to investigate and determined that there had been no drive-by shooting, and that Pickrell shot the boy. Since the victim was still on life support, Pickrell was booked into the Anaheim Detention Facility for Attempted Murder. He has since been transferred to Orange County Jail where he is being held in lieu of $1 million. Pickrell’s charge is expected to be amended to Murder in the near future.

There is no ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident.
