On 2/25/2025, at 12:03 a.m. police officers conducted a car stop of a vehicle for multiple traffic violations including the vehicle registration being expired in 2022, according to the Westminster Police Department.
The occupants of the vehicle were contacted and an inventory was done of the vehicle prior to being impounded.
Upon doing the police officers located evidence of narcotics sales. A total of 37g of fentanyl, and 16g of methamphetamine were discovered.
The owner of the vehicle was ultimately arrested and booked at the Orange County Jail on multiple drug sales related charges.
Here are the penalties for each of these offenses in California:
Selling Methamphetamine
- Simple Possession: Typically a misdemeanor with up to 1 year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Many cases can be dismissed through drug diversion programs1.
- Possession for Sale: Felony with penalties of 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in prison1.
- Selling/Transporting: Felony with penalties of 2, 3, or 4 years in prison. If transported across more than two county lines with intent to sell, the penalty increases to 3, 6, or 9 years2.
Selling Fentanyl
- General Penalties: Felony with up to 4 years in prison and fines up to $10,0003.
- Enhanced Penalties: For selling or distributing more than one kilogram of fentanyl, an additional 3 years is added to the sentence. The penalties increase with the amount, up to an additional 25 years for trafficking over 80 kilograms4.
Driving with an Expired License Plate
- Initial Penalty: A base fine of $25 plus state tax multipliers (totaling around $100-$225)5.
- Extended Periods: If driving with expired tags for over six months after being fined, your vehicle may be impounded5.
