Good afternoon, Los Al USD Families and Community,

I am briefly interrupting your day to deliver some exciting news. We are proud to announce that all nine Los Alamitos Unified schools and the District were honored with the newly created California Pivotal Practice Award.

The 2022 California Pivotal Practice Award Program, or CAPP, was unveiled this year in place of the California Distinguished Schools program, which typically honors high-performing campuses. The new program celebrates schools and districts that implemented innovative practices during the 2020-21 school year, when California required schools to offer distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The awards focused on four target areas: student engagement, social-emotional well-being of students, distribution of technology, and nutrition services.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond unveiled the winners of the program yesterday, which honored 727 schools and 121 school districts statewide. This means that our district was among less than 15 percent of districts across the state that earned this award.

This award exemplifies what it means to be “Better Together” and is a testament to the resiliency, flexibility and hard work of our entire Los Al USD community. Thank you for playing an integral role in the success of our students and our District.
