Warriors earn split with win in second game

Woodbridge High School’s baseball team battled back from a two-run deficit to take the lead, but Davis from Kaysville, Utah staged a comeback of its own to tie the game and win in eight innings 7-4 in the Warriors first game of Ryan Lemmon Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Great Park.

Woodbridge (11-6) earned a split with a 5-2 victory over Calvary Chapel in a makeup game Tuesday night at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.

In the opener, under the tiebreaker rules, Davis started with a runner on second base in the top of the eighth. The first batter Wally Grant drilled a triple to right center field to give the Darts a 5-4 lead. Max Hunter and Carter Garrett also had RBI singles to give Davis a 7-4 lead.

Woodbridge went down in order in the bottom of the inning and Davis players celebrated the victory in front of their fans who made the trip to Orange County.

“It was nice to see the bats come alive at the end, we were finally able to sit on some of those curveballs, they threw a lot of curveballs to us today and we kind of struggle a little bit with off-speed, but we had some good execution too on a couple good bunts that broke it open at the end,” said Davis Coach Josh Godfrey.

“Other than that, it was a pretty good game defensively and pitch-wise, nobody put a ton in play until the end.”

Davis is 1-1 in the tournament and 7-1 overall and will finish its four-game tournament schedule, adjusted by weekend rains, on Wednesday before heading home.

Davis led 2-0 until the fifth inning behind the solid pitching of starter Andrew Fillmoehala. But the Warriors bats came live in the bottom of the fifth. Woodbridge scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Pinch-hitter Kyle Okino, trying to sacrifice, reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Jake Haruki then delivered a two-run double to tie the game. Henry Urik drove in the go-ahead run with a squeeze bunt single and Dylan Mutuc drove in another run with a single, giving the Warriors a two-run lead.

Woodbridge reliever Mitchell Blakey, who came on in relief of starter Nolan Stottlemyer in the second inning and was effective for 4 1/3 innings, walked one batter and hit another to start the seventh and Davis cashed in the free passes scoring two runs to tie the game off two Warriors relievers before eventually winning in extra innings.

“It was a tough one, I was proud of the way we fought back,” said Woodbridge Coach Ryan Brucker. “We got a good performance from Mitchell Blakey, he deserved to win the game, unfortunately we just came up short.”

Woodbridge had scoring chances, but left the bases loaded in the first inning and dame away empty. The Warriors stranded five runners through the first four innings.

“We couldn’t execute at the end when we needed to and had a tough time early, we had some opportunities early, we just have to have better at bats in those situations,” Brucker said. “But Davis is a good team and we’ve seen them here the last few years, so we knew we would have to play well to beat them, we just came up a little short.”

Brucker was pleased with his team’s execution in the fifth.

“That’s kind of what we need to do in order to win games,” he said. “We have to be able to score runs and execute, we’re not an overly offensive team, and be able to hold them on defense, and we just couldn’t quite do it today.”

Haruki led Woodbridge offensively, going 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI. Stottlemyer had two doubles and scored a run.

Woodbridge was led offensively by Vincent De Marco, who was 2 for 2 with two RBI. Mikey Rubino and Skyler Miura also had an RBI for the Warriors. Miura was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Calvary Chapel (6-10) was led by Matthew Busch, who was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
