JSerra’s girls flag football team, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, captured the inaugual championship of the MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown Saturday in Chula Vista, defeating Newport Harbor 21-6 in the final.

The Lions (15-0) were led by Kate Meier, who had three TD passes in the championship game. She threw two touchdown passes for Tessa Russell and another to Abby VanderWeerd.
The Lions, coached by Brian Ung, advanced to the final with a 19-0 victory over West Park and a 27-0 win over Merced in the semfinals.
Newport Harbor’s touchdown came when Scarlett Guyser connected with Blakely Irvine for a score in the second quarter.
Russell, who played both ways, was named the tournament’s MVP and Meier, who completed
16-of-20 for 182 yards in the title game, was selected as the game’s offensive MVP. Guyser was named the defensive player of the game.
Newport Harbor advanced with a 14-13 victory over Carlsbad and an 8-7 win over Huntington Beach in the semifinals.
Orange County players named to the all-tournament team were: Roxie Shaia and Kyle Uno, Huntington Beach; Ava Harrison and Alyssa McClure, Orange Lutheran; Sklie Cid, Newport Harbor; and GG Szczuka, JSerra.
