Capistrano Valley’s football players and coaches were scheduled to return to Orange County Sunday after a memorable weekend trip in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Cougars, led by Coach Sean Curtis, defeated Damien in the season opener 55-6 on Friday night.

Weather was a concern going into the weekend but the game was played on schedule.
“The weather could not have been better,” Curtis said. “A slight breeze and some light rain was a pleasant surprise after the weather report called for extreme winds and possible thunderstorms. We are grateful to the city officials for allowing the game to be played with potential tropical storm warnings threatening the contest throughout the week.”
Senior quarterback Talon Spencer led the Cougars completing 11 of 14 for 146 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 62 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns.
Zadyn Hall was the leading rusher with 65 yards on seven carries and one TD. Matt Paikoff had seven carries for 56 yards.
The top receivers were Colin Hooper (three catches for 68 yards) and Brody Saavedra (four catches for 18 yards).
Capo Valley rushed for 215 yards, led by Hall who averaged more than nine yards a carry. The Cougars defense also forced five turnovers with four interceptions and a fumble recovery vs. Damien (0-2).
Capo Valley’s defense forced a three and out to start the game and the Cougars took the lead on a 9-play drive that led to Spencer’s first score.
On the next drive, Capo Valley’s Cade Epstein forced a fumble on the second play setting up the offense for another quick score rushing TD by Spencer.
“Damien’s next drive resulted in a blocked punt. Jolan Gonzalez gets credit for the block and he also recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown,” Curtis said.
“On the following possession, Colin Hooper intercepted Damien’s pass and returned it for a touchdown.”
Capo Valley led 28-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter and rolled the rest of the way to the win.
Capo Valley has a bye this week and returns to play with a week one game at home vs. Downey on Friday, Aug. 28.
