A touch of Southern California charm made its way to the Garden State recently, as former New York Yankees star and Dana Point resident Jim Leyritz took the mic as live auctioneer at the 6th Annual Friends of the ‘Well Fundraising Fest, a Kentucky Derby-themed charity event held May 2 at The Highlawn in West Orange, N.J.
Leyritz, a former Major League Baseball catcher and World Series champion—celebrated for his role during the Yankees’ dynasty years—has remained active in charitable causes and community fundraisers across the country long after his playing days ended.

More than 150 guests gathered for the spirited evening, which benefited families in need throughout Essex County. The nonprofit, founded by local philanthropists Nicole Greco-Peepas and Patrese Lattimer, aims to raise awareness about food insecurity, homelessness, and financial hardship affecting residents across the region.
The Derby-themed celebration delivered on atmosphere. Guests donned festive hats, and enjoyed lively music, Southern-inspired cuisine with a distinctly New Jersey twist, and an energetic watch party that brought together neighbors, community leaders, and supporters united behind a meaningful cause. Funds raised will go toward the local food pantry, area schools, and other grassroots initiatives serving struggling families throughout greater Essex County.
Last year’s event generated $21,000 for families in need. Organizers hoped to surpass that mark in 2025 while drawing greater attention to a crisis that too often goes unnoticed in New Jersey communities. The evening was a testament to the enduring power of community and neighbors showing up for neighbors.
