South Coast Repertory will present the premiere of “Fremont Ave.,” a powerful new play by Reggie D. White, running April 25 through May 23 on the Segerstrom Stage in Costa Mesa. Directed by Lili-Anne Brown and co-produced with Arena Stage, the play is a centerpiece of the 2026 Pacific Playwrights Festival.
A moving, semi-biographical work, “Fremont Ave.” traces the lives of three generations of Black men connected by a woman at the center of their world. Spanning decades, the story follows George, Robert, and Joseph as they navigate identity, love, and the weight of personal history, all anchored by Audrey, the woman who connects them together.
White describes the play as a “love letter” to his family, inspired by real relatives but shaped by emotional truth rather than strict biography. Blending humor with poignant reflection, the play honors lives lived with quiet dignity while exploring the complexities that define family bonds. White said he was pushed to write the play by two friends and fellow artists—Academy and Tony Award-nominated actor/director/playwright Colman Domingo and playwright Lauren Gunderson (“Emile” and “Silent Sky,” both presented at SCR).
Following a successful run at Arena Stage and having earned the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, “Fremont Ave.” is already generating buzz as a heartfelt, multigenerational story with universal resonance.
“When Fremont Ave. was presented as a reading during our 2024 Pacific Playwrights Festival, the immediate and enthusiastic audience response confirmed what we already knew—Reggie has written a beautifully moving play of substance and significance. With plenty of humor and heart, this work speaks across generations and encourages all of us to deeply consider—and reconsider—the humanity of our loved ones,” said SCR artistic director David Ivers. “It’s been thrilling partnering with Arena Stage to give audiences on both coasts the opportunity to experience this extraordinary work, destined to become a classic.”
