PHOTOS: Woodland Christian starts fast, tops Laguna Hills in CIF State Divison V final

Woodland Christian jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Laguna Hills 63-30 in the CIF State Division V girls championship game Friday morning at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

“Tough one,” Laguna Hills Coach Jim Martin told OC Sports Zone from Sacramento. “We did not have an answer for their inside game. We needed to get off to a better offensive start when we were holding them in check defensively early in the game.”

Laguna Hills led early 5-4 in the first quarter but Woodland Christian led 9-5 after one quarter before outscoring the Hawks 24-6 in the second quarter to take control.

It was the third time Laguna Hills has been in the state final. The Hawks won the state title in 1997.

Martin remained proud of his squad.

“Big picture of the season: the players showed a lot of grit and determination to get so far,” he said. “We overachieved as a team, they can be reallly proud of that.”

Siena Sorbello scored 21 points and Bailee Broward scored 17 points to lead Woodland Christian. Broward also had 10 rebounds.

Marisol Bahena scored nine points and Cameron McDermott five points to lead Laguna Hills. McDermott also had nine rebounds.

Woodland Christian made 26 of 56 field goal attempts (46.4 percent) while Laguna Hills connected on 12 of 47 shots (25.5 percent).

Woodland Christian also outrebounded Laguna Hills 40-29.

Laguna Hills also reached the CIF Division 7 championship game, losing to Kennedy 55-28.
