Tesoro (16-3 overall) went 3-1 in the tournament and won its last two games.
Owen Hatch scored 16 points, Max Draper had 10 points and nine rebounds and Carson Hatch nine points, four rebounds and two assists to lead Tesoro which jumped out to a 47-25 lead at halftime. Coach Steve Garrett substituted freely in the second and third quarters before putting the regulars back in after Tustin (10-10) cut the lead late.
Tustin was led by Brannon Hampton, who scored 13 points, Peyton Montha, who had 12 points and Anthony Morales who scored 10 points.
“Overall, it was a good tournament,” said Garrett, now in his 25th year leading the program. “Tustin hung in there at the end and gave us a good fight, they should be really proud of that. I liked how from the start we came out and jumped on them and took a big lead and had some good intensity.
“It was a great four days playing good teams. We would like to be in the championship game, but it was good. We’re trying to make other teams take tough shots, we want to to take easy ones. I think we were consistent with that early on, that was good.”
Owen Hatch, a sophomore, helped the Titans move out to a 23-10 lead in the first quarter scoring 10 points. He was named to the all-tournament team.
“We played as a team and when they started to come back, we stayed calm and got it done,” said Hatch, who plays on the team with his brother Carson, a senior. “We were up and down, but we stayed together as a team.”
After outscoring Tesoro 17-13 in the third quarter, Tustin made it close cutting the lead to 11 points with about 3:50 left in the game. Morales hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining to trim Tesoro’s lead to 64-56 with 1:26 remaining.
But Draper hit two free throws to increase the lead back to 10 points.
Tustin Coach Jonathan Antolin was pleased with Tustin’s second half effort.
“We had a decent start and then we had that second quarter,” Antolin said. “It kind of killed us and we couldn’t get through their press. We weren’t boxing out, we weren’t rebounding, we ended up down by 18 or 20 at the half and then it was encouraging to be able to see the guys be able to battle back and get it under 10 with a few minutes to go.
“They showed they can execute, they can play hard and can compete with one of the best teams in Orange County, so a lot of good takeaways from that, so definitely a plus.”
Antolin said the entire all-tournament team will be released later.
