The SAPD is trying to identify a female hit and run suspect

The Santa Ana Police Department is looking to identify a woman involved in a hit-and-run collision with an unmarked Orange County emergency vehicle in the parking lot of the Orange County Superior Courthouse.

Surveillance video shows the woman’s vehicle striking the other vehicle, then driving to the opposite end of the lot, then walking back to inspect the damage she caused before she finally left the area.

The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic female, heavy set, wearing a dark-colored blouse and dark pants. She was driving a gray 2012–2017 Toyota Camry with oxidation on the hood and aftermarket chrome wheels and tires.

If you recognize her or the vehicle, please contact Police Investigative Specialist J. Soto at (714) 245-8214 or jsoto5@santa-ana.org.

Here are the potential penalties the suspect could face under California law for a hit-and-run involving property damage only (no injuries reported):

  • Charge Type:
    • Likely misdemeanor hit-and-run under California Vehicle Code §20002 because the incident involved property damage only (the emergency vehicle) and no reported injuries.
  • Legal Duties Violated:
    • Drivers must stop immediately, provide name, address, and vehicle registration, and either notify the property owner or leave a written note and report the accident to law enforcement.
  • Penalties for Misdemeanor Hit-and-Run:
    • Up to 6 months in county jail
    • Fine up to $1,000
    • Summary probation (often up to 3 years)
    • Two points added to DMV driving record
    • Possible restitution for damages
  • Aggravating Factors:
    • If the suspect was under the influence, had a suspended license, or has prior offenses, penalties can increase significantly.
  • Felony Threshold:
    • If injuries had occurred, the charge could escalate to felony hit-and-run, punishable by up to 4 years in state prison and fines up to $10,000.
