SAPD traffic detectives need your help locating Julio Humberto Lopez Ramirez of Tustin, who is believed to be the suspect in a 2023 fatal hit-and-run.
On October 15, 2023, SAPD police officers responded to a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Brookhollow Drive.
The pedestrian, Sergio Diaz, sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After an extensive investigation, our detectives identified Ramirez as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective K. Briley at (714) 245-8215 or kbriley@santa-ana.org.
If convicted of a fatal hit-and-run in California, Julio Humberto Lopez Ramirez could face serious felony penalties under California Vehicle Code Section 20001.
Here’s a breakdown of the potential consequences:
- Felony charges: Leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death is a felony in California.
- State prison time: The penalty includes 2 to 4 years in California state prison.
- Fines: Fines can range from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the circumstances.
- Additional charges: If the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, additional charges like vehicular manslaughter or DUI causing death may apply, which carry longer sentences.
- Driver’s license suspension: A conviction may result in license suspension or revocation by the California DMV.
- Restitution to victim’s family: Courts often order the defendant to pay restitution to cover funeral expenses and other damages.
- Permanent criminal record: A felony conviction will remain on the suspect’s record and affect employment, housing, and other rights.
These penalties reflect the seriousness of fleeing the scene after causing a fatal injury. California law requires all drivers involved in a collision to stop, render aid, and report the incident. Failing to do so escalates the legal consequences significantly.
