On October 10, 2025, at 8:15 p.m., Riverside County Sheriff’s Dispatch received multiple calls of a shooting, involving an off-duty Orange County Sheriff’s Department deputy in the area of Holy Jim Trail and Main Divide Road, Santiago Peak.
Deputies from the Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station responded and determined that the off-duty deputy had been approached by an adult male, who appeared to be under the influence, and was armed with a firearm. The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and gave the male multiple verbal commands to raise his hands. The male refused to comply and subsequently removed his firearm from its holster, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting by the off-duty deputy.
The male was struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was later identified as Agustin Vazquez Calvillo, a 50-year-old resident of Perris. No other individuals were injured during the incident. The scene was secured, and the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail was requested to respond to assume the investigation. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact California Highway Patrol Detective Daniel Kavert or Riverside Sheriff’s Master Investigator Martin Alfaro at (951) 955–2777.
Possible Outcomes for the Orange County Sheriff Deputy
- Administrative Leave: It is common for law enforcement officers involved in shootings to be placed on administrative leave pending investigation, even if off-duty.
- Internal Review: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department may conduct its own internal review to determine if the deputy followed department policies and procedures.
- Criminal Investigation: If investigators find that the use of force was not justified, the deputy could face criminal charges. However, based on current reports, the deputy gave commands and responded to a perceived threat.
- Civil Litigation: The family of the deceased may file a wrongful death lawsuit, regardless of the criminal outcome.
- No Action: If the investigation concludes that the deputy acted lawfully and in self-defense, no disciplinary or legal action may be taken.
