The Veterinary Neurology Center in Tustin has welcomed Dr. Han “Emily” Sun, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), to its specialist team.
Board-certified in 2024, Dr. Sun focuses on diagnosing and treating complex neurological conditions in companion animals. Her special interests include intervertebral disc disease, immune-mediated disorders such as meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE), and urinary management for neurologically affected animals—the latter being the subject of her residency research. She is highly trained in advanced imaging, medical management, and neurosurgical procedures.
Born and raised in Beijing, China, Dr. Sun completed her undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, earned her veterinary degree at Western University of Health Sciences, and pursued her neurology residency at Auburn University in Alabama. She is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, and her background reflects both the global nature of veterinary medicine and the determination required to succeed in such a competitive field.
Veterinary neurology is among the most specialized disciplines in animal health. Fewer than 400 board-certified veterinary neurologists currently practice in the United States, and the path to certification requires nearly a decade of intensive training. Even fewer specialists come from international backgrounds, underscoring the rarity of Dr. Sun’s achievement.
“My original goal was to study ecological and biological sciences,” said Dr. Sun. “That path evolved into veterinary medicine as I discovered my passion for helping families and their pets. Over time, neurology became my focus because I was drawn to the complexity of the field and the chance to make a lasting difference for patients facing difficult diseases.”
The Veterinary Neurology Center is one of the largest specialty neurology practices in the region, with eight board-certified neurologists, two on-site MRI machines, 6-day-a-week appointment availability, and 24/7 on-call support to provide timely, advanced care for pets with neurological disease. The addition of Dr. Sun expands the hospital’s ability to meet the growing demand for specialized neurological services in Southern California.
