The University High School boys tennis team captured its10th Griggs Cup at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament Saturday afternoon after a rain delay, according to Coach John Kessler.

“Uni’s sophomore sensation Rishvanth Krishna defeated Matteo Huarte from Mater Dei 6-4, 6-4 to capture the Ojai CIF singles title,” Kessler said.

He became the fourth University player to win the singles title in the last six years, according to Kessler.

University’s James MacDonald (Harvard) won in 2023, Conrad Brown (UC Santa Barbara) won in 2022, and Aditya Gupta (UPenn) in 2019, Kessler said. There wasn’t a tournament in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.

Uni’s Gage Brymer (UCLA) also won three singles titles in a row from 2011 to 2013, Kessler added,

“Additionally Krishna joins Uni teammates JiHyuk Im and Human Alajeely, who lost in the doubles semi-final, to win the team trophy (The Griggs Cup) for an incredible 10th time (for Uni),” Kessler said.

The CIF high school portion of the Ojai tournament began in 1955 and the Trojans now only trail Santa Barbara high, who have won the Griggs Cup 12 times, Kessler said.

Top seeded University finishes league play this week before heading to the CIF playoffs as the defending CIF, Southern California Regional and state champions.
